the elephant in the room

The main problem with department of education practices is getting lied to on a regular basis if you are in dispute.....and them professing to believe the testimony of their partners even when you could drive a truck through the stories. I have known honest government agencies---the Internal Revenue Service has ALWAYS been honest with me---but even Congressional staffs tell me Education just gives them the runaround.

ombudsman's response was decent

Though the above is still true, I must be fair and report that the Education Department ombudsman did take a look at my charges against the collectors. The result was the loan was recalled from collection (even though the original overseers bought the stories) and the collection fees have been taken off! Since I will gladly expose what is going wrong, thought I should mention something right.

ED Ombudsperson

True, I have found a few (VERY few) helpful people in that Department, but most others are just not worth praising. They are after all bureaucrats: the are really not there to think. The helpful ones are usually low on the pay scale and will not challenge practices that make the student loan system such a profitable one. The ones on the top will either benefit from the system or just want to avoid political conflicts. We can't be too naive about this department.
