oldest? 32 years and counting

My defaulted student loans were originated 1968-74. Anyone out there from that era?

There is this terrible collection Agency in Atlanta GA. Anyone have experience with them??

Consolidation

The problem with consolidation is that gives you a new, later origination date to restart the process afresh, with any later conditions they may wish to unilaterally apply. Even in the case that a statute of limitations reappears for this one (remarkably) excluded class of debt, I think there must be advantages to not refreshing a debt.

Also in the 90's, to our horror, my ex and I were offered a different flavor, the "family consolodation"- to roll past, present and future student debt into one. I imagine some divorcing spouses of lesser income are temped by this offer. To me it looked like the oldest trick in the book: stand back and allow me to injure or prejudice someone and I will give you something for it.

I was married to someone 6 years younger than I. My loans were taken out when my ex was in elementary school. There is no way I would sign on to make him responsible for that mess as a parting gift.

However, far and away the most unthinkable feature of the "family consolodation" was making our daughter liable for our, her parent's student loans.

Consolodation in 1998 meant agreeing to one or both of the above, before the creditor's agents would even talk to me.

I had to say "no". Go ahead and kill me, but stay away from my child and her other source of support, if not mine. I am apalled and totally disgusted they even would think of this scheme.

When I wrote or called them, all any of the creditor's agents I had contact with ever offered me- was one of the above as the poisoned aperatifs.

Making a 1968-74 loan into a 1998 loan makes no sense. Then as now, I have no job nor prospects and could not, in good conscience, sign my name to an agreement to pay when I had no idea how I was going to live, let alone get funds to make payments to the collection agents.

wow, i thought I was the oldest in SL's

you take the cake here....my SL's and problems date back to 1981.....and it still is a current nightmare

My Student Loan Was From 1980

The best thing I did was consolidate with Direct Loans. (Thanks to Dave_C)
Several thousand dollars was knocked off with a lower interest rate and
no more collectors with a very low payment. I am hearing more people
coming out of the woodwork with loans from the 60s due to aggressive
collectors coming after them!
