declaring bankruptcy to try and pay student loans...
Hello all. I am so thankful I have found this site. Here's my situtaion. I'll try and keep it brief.
I am sitting in some pretty serious debt issues, from student loans, and other debts. I went through my undergrad, grad school, and a year of post grad work, and used student loans to pay for it all, along with extra for living expenses. My ex-wife convinced me, when she started school, that since I was already in, it would be easier for me to borrow more, and pay her tuition, so we would jsut have one student loan payment, after graduation. Well jumping ahead, we have divorced, she got her nursing degree on me, and now I am looking at around $200k in student loan debt. Payments have been delayed, because of financial hardship, for the past 3 years, and interest have ballooned. I am not re-married, and between my wife and I, we make about $50k per year. I want to start paying on my loans, but our other debts, credit cards, legal fees, balance on a vehicle my ex had reposessed, some medical bills, and an outstanding cell phone bill from my ex.
Totaling up all those debts, I am putting out, about $600 a month. If I declare bankruptcy, I can apply that to my student loans, which is quite a bit less than what they want, but it's all I can afford. Any advice on what to do?
Very difficult to bankrupt student loans
I has been done but the chances may be less than 10% of being successful.
